Face.com has released a new Facebook application calledPhoto Finder that lets users find photos of themselves or friends through facial recognition.
Here’s how it works: When you log into Photo Finder, the app uses its facial recognition technology to search for untagged pictures of you or your friends throughout Facebook by scanning all the public photos in your network. When it finds photos, it suggests tags based strictly on the faces identified. This could lead to less embarrassing pictures floating about without your knowledge. So far, it seems to work pretty well.
Face.com, based in Tel Aviv and New York, apparently built the Facebook app as a technology demonstration. The company is angel funded and currently raising an A round. While it’s still in closed beta, the first 100 Inside Facebook users who click on this link will be able to try the app out.
I can definitely see the security aspect of this technology. However, if someone else had one picture of me could they find all of the others? it sounds like it would hurt just as much as it helps.
ReplyDeleteI'm not really a fan of this idea. I untag certain pictures intentionally, whether it's because it's unflattering or because I don't want my mom or boss to be able to see it. I think it wouldn't be so bad if you could somehow opt in or out for whether or not you want someone to be able to search for you on the application.
ReplyDeleteWow, I can't believe technology. this reminds me of something in a police file. It's cool but kinda scarey. I have the same question that Cortney has brought up, what is the security on the facebook?I agree it's a worry that someone could find all types of pictures of you. I'm sure that they have a tight security because now a days there are so many types of fraud and harassments. I don't know, if I would do it though.
ReplyDeleteA friend of mine went through some big changes in her life and went over Facebook untagging old photos that didn't really show her the way she was anymore. One of the problems I have with this idea is that it doesn't let you "clean up" in a situation like that; there's not a chance to change your record if your photos are being automatically tagged.
