I have finally tried to figure out the power of twitter. I can be found at www.twitter.com/ideaguy42. Since I haven't figured out what to do with my twitter address to help the world, I decided to get your feedback. First, watch this link from Evan Williams, the co-founder of Twitter, and then comment on the future of twitter with ideas about how it could have future positive implications in this crazy world of ours.

Here's some more of Evan Williams describing unusual uses and purposes for Twitter, including emergency personnel keeping track of wildfires and a taco truck in California that Twitters where it'll be. (We might have seen this one in class...)

And David Pogue, the NYT's tech columnist, on what he's doing with it.

There's a book called "The Ipod and Philosophy" that has a chapter called "Podcrastination" that talks about using Twitter and text messaging for creating "smart mobs" (groups of people spontaneously organizing around a topic or cause) and what its effects could be on politics.

from what I understand twitter is similar to face board or blogging. The difference between those social interactions and twitter is that it has 140 characteristics like texting and the relationships between viewers are not as personal. You can choose to know them or not, they can just send you info. Another point he discussed was how twitter allows more freedom than when you blog, so that will make alot of viewers happy. I don't really have any suggestions how to make twitter better, I am going to investigate twitter a little more before I answer that.
ReplyDeleteI have come to think of twitter as a social networking for the simple minded. Its nice to see a "social networking" type site without all of the applications, adds, bands or annoying notifications of the other Myspace and Facebook like sites. The limited characters make the site simpler and more basic giving the reader a simple sound bite. it also speaks to the shortening attention span of people. We don't really want beyond what can be typed into one text message.
